We don't live in boxes.

"Think outside the box (TOB)," is so commonly heard as an axiom for solving problems and creating change that it is now cliche. It's up there with "brainstorming." They are not inherently bad, but they are overused and honestly insufficient for the challenges of the 2nd quarter of the 21st century and beyond.
Randy Gage, in a wildly thought-provoking book says we need to blow up the box and tap "Mad Genius," incidentally the title of the book. He argues in distinctly Randy Gage fashion that we "can't just think out of the box, out of this world, or even out of the universe."
He's right. Thinking outside the box is no longer enough, if it ever was enough. We don't live in boxes. If only life were that neat and three-dimensionally quadrate. Even if we did live in boxes, no two boxes would be created equal. My so-called thinking outside the box would differ immensely from yours, and from everyone else's. There is no TOB formula.
But they - the collective unnamed everybody else - like to offer us neat and tidy formulas, that truth be told, rarely work. There is no master key program or process, despite the fact that we - the collective unnamed us - like to think there are and that they will work. Meanwhile, we spend countless hours and dollars trying them on for size or at least pretending to, all the while becoming more and more frustrated that our changes - dietary, financial, career, interpersonal, etc. - don't create lasting and impactful results.
Who's fooling who?
From Boxes to Asteroids
Our lives are more like asteroids, in all shapes and sizes, multi-morphous and always changing. No two asteroids are alike, and so there is no easy TOB formula for problem solving and change, much less complete transformation.
It's time to blow up the box and look at the amazing and complex star-stuff that we are when it comes to our personal transformation. We can learn to ignite our hardened rocky existences and expand them at their very edges.
Shooting star, anyone?
Growth ONLY happens at the EDGE!
We can grow or we can shrink. Growth is a choice; shrinking is the default choice for not having chosen. And all growth happens at the edges of our thinking and being.
How do we do this in the cookie cutter TOB world that rarely offers much more than symptom management? What do we do when the practices and strategies that we have tried so far have stopped working or never really worked at all?
We can try to do the hard work ourselves, sorting through all the literature and recommendations or we can come to the EDGE of ourselves with the help of a trusted coach. A coach who understands that you aren't a box and don't live in a box; that you are multi-faceted and amazing and that pat coaching formulas won't work for you.
